PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Many of the innovative new products today come from the interdisciplinary field of info-bionics combining computer science, electrical engineering, and biotechnology (e.g.: sequencing tools, BCI, implants, sensory robotics).
Our Info-bionics Engineering Master’s Program aims to develop core competencies through subjects in modeling, neural sciences, electrophysiology, electronics, and computer science.
A deep understanding of biological processes and measurements (e.g.: neural signals, communications, cell-cell interactions, data processing of living organisms) helps us develop engineering solutions, instruments, devices, computational algorithms, and models to augment or supplement a biological system. These also help in the measurement, control, and operation of vital processes affecting living organisms and the quality of human life.
Application and research examples: prostheses, rehabilitation, bionic eyeglasses, brain-computer interfaces, neural electrodes, limb actuation, wheelchair navigation or minimally invasive surgery tools, multimodal medical imaging, bioinformatics, intelligent or sensory-actuating robotics, nanosensors.

Programme structure
Shape the future with your knowledge!
The program unfolds over a duration of 1+4 semesters (1 foundation semester + 4 semesters), providing a comprehensive and structured educational experience.
FOUNDATION SEMESTER
International students must attend a Foundation Semester in the fall semester, before starting the actual Master’s program. Thus, the actual commencement of the Master’s program is February.
The goal of the foundation semester is to level students for their Master’s program in Budapest, helping to ensure that they can complete their studies successfully.
The foundation semester helps students to recap, develop, and upgrade the Bachelor-level skills needed to succeed in their Master’s program.
Students may only start the four-semester Master’s program upon successful completion of the Foundation Semester.
CURRICULUM
The interdisciplinary field of info-bionics combines the fields of computer science, electronics and biotechnology. Our master’s program aims to develop complex modeling competencies as well as the operation and design of tools for our students. A deep understanding of biological processes and measurements strengthens the development of engineering solutions, tools, computational algorithms, and models used in biological systems.
The curriculum of the Info-Bionics MSc study program (120 credits) includes the following modules:
- Fundamentals in Natural Sciences and Mathematics (requirements for diploma: 15-25 credits)
- Economics and Humanities (requirements for diploma: 5-15 credits)
- Skills in Neural Sciences and Electrophysiology (requirements for diploma: 11-22 credits)
- Skills in Electronics and Computer Sciences (requirements for diploma: 11-30 credits)
- Specialization (requirements for diploma: 30-50 credits)
- Project Work and Thesis Work (requirements for diploma: 42 credits)
- Other elective subjects (maximum 6 credits)
SPECIALIZATIONS
The specializations developed in the program prepare our students for the following areas of research and development and innovation activities:
Bionic Interfaces
In the Bionic Interfaces specialization, we focus on the tools needed for human-machine interfaces. Focused knowledge is necessary to understand how to interface with the human body in different ways and to obtain a control signal or feedback sensory information. These can be used to drive prosthetic limbs or replace lost sensory or locomotor functions. Useful new and innovative knowledge can be obtained in the fields of sensory robotics for medical rehabilitation devices, performance measurement and improvement for athletes, and ways to interact with computers.
Bio-nano Sensors and Imaging Devices
In the bio-nano sensors and imaging devices specialization, we focus on the new devices for multimodal medical imaging. Specialized knowledge is required to understand the principles of operation of different sensor and actuator devices, as well as the interaction of matter and photons (electromagnetic radiation). Applying this, we can create complex devices that allow us to look in ever greater detail into the functioning of our tissues, even at the molecular level, in an increasingly non-invasive way. By further developing such devices, new features can be added to both the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of medical imaging. By mastering them, useful knowledge can be acquired within this specialization, including new and innovative tools and devices.
Systems Biology
The specialization in systems biology focuses on the interaction and system-level behavior modeling of biological systems. In-depth molecular and cellular knowledge, nonlinear dynamical systems, and skills in mathematical modeling, as well as appropriate parallel programming skills, are required to construct and interpret successful model systems. The models include molecular reaction kinetic networks, protein-protein interactions, cell networks, and epidemiological modeling. We also deal with the issues of operation and dynamics of these networks, as well as their regulation in the subjects of this specialization. The goal is to be able to create predictive models that can be used in diagnostics and therapy to develop or complement new products and services based on the results of quantitative medical research.
Neural Data Science
In the neural data science specialization, our focus is on the data set and its interpretation generated in quantitative neuroscience research. Applied neuroscience, data science skills, and machine learning are required knowledge to interpret the large amount of data generated during quantitative neuroscience measurements and to apply it in the development of diagnostic or therapeutic tools. Students who choose this specialization will have the opportunity to gain insight into the broad spectrum of quantitative neuroscience research, in terms of the tools and the data, and the data processing algorithms. By applying modern machine learning methods and tools, students can gain useful knowledge with new and innovative potential and become part of a new era of quantitative neuroscience research and development. The specialization is taught in close cooperation with research laboratories and researchers from IEM, RCNS, and HAS.
